Hong Kong Police Use Metaverse Platform to Fight Cryptocurrency Crime

Police in Hong Kong, China launched a new Web3 platform called “Cyber Defender Metaverse” on Saturday to fight cryptocurrency crimes. During the press conference, Chief Inspector Yap Cheuk Yu of the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) discussed the dangers posed by Web3. Crimes such as fraud, hacking, theft and sex crimes are all threats in the Metaverse, he told attendees, and the event also focused on the use of digital assets by contemporary cybercriminals and the progress made in fighting crypto crime.
In a press release issued at the time of publication, the Hong Kong police stated that 2,336 crimes related to virtual assets were recorded across the city in 2022. These cost victims $1.7 billion.
