Próspera ZEDE, a special economic zone located on the Honduran island of Roatan, has taken a significant step towards financial innovation by adopting Bitcoin as a unit of account. Jorge Colindres, the driving force behind this initiative, aims to enhance monetary choice for residents and businesses within the zone, allowing for transactions and tax obligations to be conducted using the popular cryptocurrency.
On Sunday, Colindres reaffirmed Próspera’s commitment to expanding monetary options through social media, underscoring the zone’s progressive approach to digital currencies. Despite this forward-thinking move, the current eGovernance system mandates that tax calculations in Bitcoin be reported in traditional currencies, such as US dollars or Honduran lempira. Próspera is actively exploring solutions to enable full transactional and reporting functionality in Bitcoin.
Since its establishment in May 2020, Próspera has evolved into a thriving hub for investment and employment opportunities. However, the Central Bank of Honduras remains cautiously reserved about the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies at the national level, signaling a conservative stance amid the increasing global interest in digital assets.
