Morgan Stanley Reveals Significant Stake in BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF

Morgan Stanley, a leading U.S. investment bank, has disclosed a substantial investment in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. According to an SEC filing made on August 14, the bank held approximately $188 million in the ETF as of June 30, 2024, translating to over 5.5 million shares for the second quarter of the year.

In addition to this major holding, Morgan Stanley reported smaller investments in various other cryptocurrency-related funds. These include Valkyrie’s ETF Trust, Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, Bitcoin Depot, Bitwise’s Bitcoin ETF, Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF, and ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF. These investments preceded the bank’s recent decision to allow its advisors to recommend Bitcoin ETFs to clients, specifically mentioning the IBIT and FBTC funds.

Aside from the BlackRock ETF, Morgan Stanley also held approximately $148,000 in Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust and $1.6 million in the Ark21Shares Bitcoin ETF. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs reported a significant exposure to over $238 million in IBIT and other cryptocurrency ETFs.

Earlier disclosures indicated that Millennium Management had invested $2 billion across five crypto ETFs. Additionally, state pension and retirement funds from Wisconsin and Michigan have also engaged with cryptocurrency-linked ETFs.
